investigate

the first step for this brief was making notes of everything i was thinking and reading. the idea was to experiment with using GCD tools to investigate hands as an interface. after reading a tactile dinner party and gastrophysics i was led down the path of exploring touch via the hand.

i asked on instagram stories what my followers favourite thing to do with their hands was. i wanted to include others in this research process because everyone has a different relationsihp with their hands.

i followed this research by asking a variety of people to touch something and describe it to me, without using the name of the object. my first iteration was to keep the responses as text, manipulating the size and weight to add emphasis to different words. following that i redacted certain words to explore the same idea.

i went on to draw these descriptions, still not aware of what they were descriptions of. that resulted in these interesting abstracted drawings. i then wanted to make them into tangible objects.

with covid/lockdown restrictions in place these clay objects act as prototypes and a proposal for a larger idea. the objects are meant to be felt and touched carrying on the idea of describing and creating. it would involve the objects being made out of a variety of materials and the participants variety of ages to gather a more broad understanding of touch.

in general i found this project really useful for my practise because of the need for quick experimentation. i struggled a bit at the start because of the lack of working towards an outcome, but i actually think that became a positive thing to overcome. the idea of an open-ended way of working will be liberating to my practise.
